YouTube Music's New Feature: Start Radio from Now Playing Screen
On Android, YouTube Music now enables users to initiate a radio session directly from the Now Playing screen. By clicking on the album artwork of a song and selecting the button on the far right, users can start a radio playlist containing similar songs. Although the ‘Start radio' option has been available in YouTube Music's overflow menu for some time, it is now surfacing as a faster alternative. Google has recently introduced various new features for YouTube Music, with this being the latest addition.
When playing a song on YouTube Music, users can tap on the ‘Start radio' option within the album artwork interface to access a collection of similar songs. This option, which is the fourth button, triggers a toast message that declares the initiation of a radio session. The update was initially discovered by 9to5Google, which found that this feature had been in testing for several weeks.
Before this update, users could access the ‘Start radio' option through the overflow menu in YouTube Music. While this option remains available, the new method provides a quicker way to embark on a radio playlist of similar songs. Additionally, users can also long-press any song outside the player to begin a station. Although this feature is useful, the new ‘Start radio' button may be challenging to identify, requiring users some time to understand its purpose.
Throughout the last few months of 2020, Google released numerous features for YouTube Music as it phased out Google Play Music and encouraged users to switch to YouTube's music platform. One of these features, introduced in November, was Quick Picks, which offers a radio playlist of similar songs upon selecting a song. This feature aimed to efficiently introduce users to more music based on their preferences.
