If you've already submitted a renewal application to Health Canada and there are no changes, you're free to continue producing cannabis for your medical purposes. After reviewing your application, we'll contact you with further instructions and feedback.
Information for Patients
Your healthcare provider can fill out and submit this form to show their support for you using cannabis for medical purposes. Alternatively, they can use a different document, but it must contain the necessary information as outlined in Section 273 of the Cannabis Regulations.
For Individuals Registering with Health Canada Licence Holders: If you prefer to get cannabis from a licensed seller, such as a cultivator or processor, send the document directly to your chosen licensed seller. A comprehensive list of license holders authorized to sell cannabis for medical purposes can be found on the Health Canada website. You're also free to change your licensed seller at any time by requesting the transfer of your original medical document.
For Individuals Registering with Health Canada to Produce or Possess Cannabis for Medical Purposes: If you choose to produce cannabis for yourself, designate someone else to do it on your behalf or just register for possession, the original document must be submitted to Health Canada with the proper application form.
Information for Healthcare Professionals
To assist healthcare providers who authorize their patients to use cannabis for medical purposes, Health Canada has published three relevant documents on its website. These documents contain essential information about the medicinal use of cannabis, optimal dosing and administration, and patient guidelines.
Patient surveys and clinical studies suggest that 3 grams or less of dried cannabis per day is the recommended daily dosage for medicinal purposes. However, lesser amounts (around 1 gram per day) are indicated to be equally effective with minimal side effects. At present, the average daily authorized amount for patients who obtain their cannabis from licensed sellers is 2.1 grams.
Several provincial and territorial medical licensing bodies, as well as the College of Family Physicians of Canada, have issued their own set of recommendations for healthcare practitioners regarding the authorization of cannabis for medical purposes.
