Three Simple Solutions for Changing a Recessed Lightbulb.
If you are struggling with how to deal with a burnt-out bulb in a recessed fixture, do not worry as you are not alone. Perhaps you are wondering whether you need to remove the collar bordering the fixture or what to do if the bulb breaks. Well, you can breathe a sigh of relief because we have got you covered. Even if you are unable to take out the bulb by hand, there are several uncomplicated methods to remove it safely so you can replace it. In this article, we will illustrate how to take out and substitute a bulb inside of a recessed light fixture. Please note that the guidance here is specific to bulbs only. The process of changing LED pot lights is a different one.
One straightforward way to remove the bulb is to turn off the lights, climb a ladder and take out the bulb cautiously by hand if you can reach it. Another way is to use a loop of duct tape or a light bulb changing pole to substitute a bulb you cannot reach. While the collar of the fixture can be removed if you wish, it is typically not needed.
To replace the bulb, follow these simple steps. First, let the lights cool and climb a ladder. If you see the bulb's edges, replace it by hand like any other light bulb. Flip the switch to turn off the lights and wait 2-3 minutes as the bulb cools. Then, grab a ladder or sturdy chair and place it below the bulb. If you need to access the bulb and there is a kitchen island or countertop you can stand on, go ahead and use that. In case you need to climb the top two to three steps of the ladder, ask a family member or a friend to support the ladder.
The next step is to rotate the bulb counterclockwise. Gently twist the bulb to the left and unscrew it from the socket. If you feel some bouncing going on around inside the fixture, don't worry as many recessed lights use springs to hang the socket in the air. Remove the bulb carefully and come down off the ladder.

Finally, replace the bulb the same way you removed it. Take it with you to the hardware store and look for an identical wattage and socket type for replacement. This information is typically printed on the bulb near the stem base. Take your replacement home, climb up the ladder and put the new bulb in its place. Screw it in gently, and your lighting will be back to its former glory.
