Why did you call an election in the midst of the fourth wave of the economic downturn?" O'Toole questioned Trudeau just before 8 p m the "Face-a-Face" debate on TVA
Asking, "Would we be holding elections right now if you were in a majority government?" Blanchet also said that the Liberal leader's primary goal was to gain a majority in the House of Commons.
We are currently in the decision-making process. Since his Liberal minority government was elected before the pandemic struck and shifted federal priorities, Trudeau said, "Not in three months, not in a year." "We have to give Canadians a say. ”

Singh shifted the conversation away from vaccines and claimed Trudeau had not done enough to tax corporations and the wealthy to reinvest in Canada.
The debate focuses on three key areas: the pandemic, societal concerns, and economic revival.
Quebecor TV network TVA Nouvelles will host and broadcast the Face-à-Face (faceoff) beginning at 8 p. m This debate, which begins at 9:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday, is the first of three in which all four major party leaders will take part. In the first televised French debate, each leader will be aiming to gain traction in the crucial province of Quebec.
Only four prominent leaders are competing. The network did not extend an invitation to Green Party Leader Annamie Paul or People's Party Leader Maxime Bernier.
With a poll released Thursday morning showing that the chances of a runoff Liberal win in a majority of Quebec ridings are increasingly unlikely, the stakes couldn't be higher for either leader.
However, the data shows that Quebec voters are still highly unpredictable and divided. Jean-Marc Léger, CEO of Léger, recently stated to Le Journal de Québec, "One out of two voters do not know who they will vote for yet." This is a game-changing debate. The initial step is the most crucial. ”
Leger reports that both the Liberals' (33% support) and the Bloc Québécois' (28% support) popularity in Quebec have declined by 8% and 1%, respectively, since the beginning of the campaign.
On the other hand, both O'Toole of the Conservatives (20%) and Singh of the New Democratic Party (13%), have seen significant increases in their popularity among Quebecers, each by 5%.
Léger told the Journal de Québec that O'Toole's early success has made the race for Quebec's provincial legislature more competitive than it was before, when it was just between the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois.
According to Léger, "we can see that there's a movement that's benefiting the Conservatives."
He went on to say that, with regards to the ridings in the middle of the province, "it's really a three-way race," which is not something he would have said at the beginning of the campaign.
O'Toole's performance in a French debate will be closely watched and listened to. Andrew Scheer, the former Conservative leader, performed poorly in la langue de Molière during a TVA debate in 2019, which directly impacted the party's popularity in Quebec. A second majority mandate for Trudeau was stolen from him in part due to the efforts of Blanchet, a political newcomer at the time who helped revitalize the Bloc Québécois.
While polls show the NDP's support has grown in the province as a whole, it is still concentrated in a handful of central and eastern Montreal districts.
The four leaders spent most of Thursday in private preparation for the debate, so their public schedules were minimal at best.
TVA debates feature multiple one-on-one meetings between the two leaders, allowing for more in-depth and lengthy discussions. Access it in French via the web or the TVA app.
On September, there will be two final debates. 8, 9 in Gatineau, Quebec (French and English). Paul will take part in those debates while Bernier will not because he did not meet the criteria set forth by the independent commission.
