There are four types of psychologists: those who work under supervision, those who can practice independently temporarily, and those who can eventually move into autonomous practice. To become a Psychological Associate with Supervised Practice, you must have a Master's Degree in Psychology and four years of professional experience after receiving your Master's. The first order of business is to get a bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field.

Achieve a graduate degree of at least a master's
To become a registered Ontario Psychological Associate with a Supervised Practice, one needs a Masters in Psychology and four years of relevant work experience after earning their Master's. In Ontario, these are the differences between a Psychologist and a Psychological Associate:
Assistant Psychologist, Internship
- You needed a master's degree in psychology to apply for a certificate as a Psychological Associate with Supervised Practice, and you couldn't have been licensed to practice psychology anywhere else. Or, you hold a Master's degree and have previously registered in a province where the standards for doing so differ significantly from those in Ontario.
Supervised Psychological Practice
- In order to qualify for a license as a Psychologist in Supervised Practice, you need a Ph.D. in the field and you can't have ever been licensed as a psychologist before. Alternately, you hold a Ph.D. in psychology but have been practicing psychology for less than five years because the requirements in your home country are different from those in Ontario.
Interim Independent Practice as a Psychological Associate
- If you want to get your hands on a Psychological Associate Interim Autonomous Practice certificate, you'll need to prove that you've been in independent practice of psychology with a Master's degree in a jurisdiction other than Ontario for at least the five years prior to applying.
Free-Roaming Psychologist in the Interim
- To qualify for the Psychologist Interim Autonomous Practice certificate, applicants must have been in continuous registration as a psychologist outside of Ontario for the preceding five years on the basis of a doctoral degree.

The College of Psychologists in Ontario is where you should go to get your credentials as a Psychological Associate or Psychologist in Ontario.
Prospective members can consult a page on the College's website to learn more about the various certificates they could pursue (Psychological Associate, Psychologist, etc.). ) Click HERE to visit that site This questionnaire is fairly basic in its algorithmic approach, but it can serve as a useful primer for those who aren't familiar with Ontario's standards for registering as a Psychological Associate or Psychologist.
It is possible to apply for the position of Psychological Associate Candidate while finishing up your Master's degree, and for the position of Psychologist Candidate while enrolled in a Doctoral program in Psychology. This is predicated on the assumption that you are making progress toward fulfilling your responsibilities.

Assistant Psychologist, Internship
Psychological Associate with Supervised Practice is defined as "temporary and transitional period during which the candidate actively prepared for autonomous practice" by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. The end goal is independent practice, which necessitates the following.
- Application packets must include three references and academic transcripts.
- A psychology master's degree from a reputable university
- Completion of a Master's Degree and at least four years of relevant work experience

- Achieve a passing score on the College's Law and Ethics Test

Profession of Psychologist in Training under Supervision
The requirements for the Psychologist in Supervised Practice certificate are similar, with the largest difference being the need for a doctoral degree in psychology. Moreover, a minimum of 3000 hours of supervised practice is required, of which at least 1500 hours (1 year) must be accrued after the doctoral degree has been earned.
The following is a complete list of what you need to do to work independently as a psychologist in Ontario:
- Include three references and official transcripts with your application.
- Earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from an Accredited Program
- Achieved the end of your "supervised practice" period
- Successfully complete the EPPP (Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology).
- Meet the College's Jurisprudence and Ethics Test Requirements
- Successfully complete the College's Oral Exam
- Have finished any additional training that the College may require
Assistant Psychologist, Self-Directed Interim Practice
There are two main requirements to meet in order to qualify for a certificate as a Psychological Associate in Interim Autonomous Practice:
- For the past five years prior to applying for the certificate, you have worked as a licensed psychologist in a jurisdiction with which the college either has a written agreement or whose requirements are substantially similar to the college's.
- Provide evidence of registration with either the Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology (CRHSPP) or the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology (NRHSPP) in a Canadian jurisdiction.
In the meantime, you can practice independently as a psychologist.
These three generic steps are used for registering as an Interim Autonomous Practice for Psychologist.
- In the five years prior to applying for the certificate, you worked as a psychologist in a jurisdiction with which the college has a written agreement, or in a jurisdiction whose requirements are substantially similar to the college's.
- Hold a valid CPQ issued by a state or provincial psychology board that is currently recognized by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) OR
- Register as a psychologist on either the Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology (CRHSPP) or the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology (NRHSPP) in a Canadian province or territory.
