The 12 Simple Steps (with Images) to Take Off Your Shower Head

  1. 1

Figure out why your shower head won't budge. A properly functioning shower head should be easily removed by hand. You'll have to resort to other methods of shower head removal if this isn't an option. Evaluate the fixture to find out why the shower head is stuck before making any more attempts to remove it:

    • Look for rust around the shower head's connection to the shower arm. Is there an orange or copper ring there?
    • Keep an eye out for a white ring around the shower head's connection to the shower arm, a telltale sign of mineral buildup.
    • A too-tight connection may be to blame if your shower head shows no signs of rust or mineral buildup.
  2. 2

Stop the flow of water. You don't have to turn off the water if you're just going to remove the shower head by hand. However, there are additional difficulties and dangers associated with removing a stuck shower head. Therefore, you should turn off the water supply. Each of two possible locations houses a water shutoff:

    • Put it below the lavatory
    • Below the bathroom in the basement, near the tub

Get your workspace ready. Your shower or bathtub may be harmed by the tools and chemicals you use during this process. Use a heavy duty work blanket to protect your bathroom's flooring from water damage. You'll be dealing with very minute components, too. Stuff a cloth down the drain to catch any stray pieces. [1]

To get rid of the shower head, you can use a wrench or pliers. Simple tools like wrenches and pliers can usually be relied upon to free a stuck shower head. If one strategy fails, move on to the next.

    • Wrap an old cloth around the plumbing nut or connector of the fixture to prevent the metal from scratching.
    • Locking pliers or a wrench can be used to secure the connector's hold.
    • Start by trying to loosen the rust or mineral deposits by turning the wrench or pliers in a clockwise direction.
    • To disengage and remove the shower head, rotate the tool counterclockwise. [2]
  2. 2

Clean the shower head with something that gets rid of rust, calcium, and lime. Connectors and nuts may become loose if chemicals are used to treat rust and mineral buildup.

    • The rust, calcium, and lime remover bottle should be read in full. Use the item as directed.
    • Let the product rest for the specified amount of time.
    • You can get rid of the rust, calcium, and lime by scrubbing the product with a wire brush.
    • Make sure the shower head and arm are spotless by wiping them down. [3]
  3. 3

Shower heads should be treated with a penetrating lubricant. When your shower head gets stuck, try using a penetrating lubricant like WD-40 or Liquid Wrench.

    • Coat the connector or nut with a single layer of the penetrating lubricant. Two hours of resting time is recommended.
    • It's recommended to give the connector or nut an additional coating of the penetrating lubricant. Leave it alone for two hours.
    • Wrap a cloth around the bolt or nut to protect it.
    • Use a wrench on the fixture or nut and try to loosen the shower head. [4]

Shower heads can be cleaned by soaking them in vinegar overnight. After taking the showerhead off, give the fixture a good scrub to get rid of any rust or mineral buildup.
    • The showerhead should be placed in a tiny bowl.
    • Saturate the shower head with white vinegar by pouring enough into the basin to cover it.
    • Soak the showerhead in vinegar overnight.
    • Turn on the cold water and raise the shower head. [5]
  2. 2

Clean the shower head of any lingering rust or mineral deposits. After the vinegar soak, check for rust or mineral buildup in the shower head. Apply a rust, calcium, and lime remover to the shower head if mineral buildup is noticeable. A wire brush can be used to remove the product after letting it sit for the recommended amount of time. [6]

    • You should always refer to the product's instructions.
  3. 3

Clean the shower arm's treads of any old tape, rust, or mineral buildup. Remove the shower head and clean the shower arm before reattaching the head.

    • Remove the discarded plumber's tape from the treads of the shower arm. When necessary, use a wire brush or an exacto knife.
    • A rust, calcium, and lime remover should be used on the shower head if rust or mineral buildup is visible.
    • Make sure to let the product rest for the specified amount of time.
    • Get rid of the residue and the rust, calcium, and lime with the help of a wire brush.
    • Wipe the shower arm down with a rag. [7]

You can use plumber's tape to seal off the shower arm's threads. Leaks can be avoided by taping the threads of the shower arm with plumber's tape or teflon tape. [8]
    • Apply two or three layers of plumber's tape in a clockwise spiral around the threads of the shower arm.
    • Roll the tape in between the strands [9]
  2. 2

Join the shower arm to the shower head, whether it's the old one or the new one. The shower head can be installed on the shower arm once it has been prepared. You can either keep using the shower head you already have or go out and buy a new one. There is a wide variety of fittings available:

    • Place a showerhead on a wall mount. Simply put, this is a showerhead. The shower head must be screwed onto the shower arm's threads. Tighten the screw with your hands by turning it clockwise.
    • Put a handheld showerhead on it. There's a hose connected to this showerhead.
      • The shower arm mount must be attached to the shower arm. Use your hands to snug up the shower arm.
      • Attach the hose's mounting end to the wall bracket, and the other end to the shower head. [10] You can hand-tighten the connectors.
      • Anchor the showerhead to the wall or ceiling.
  3. 3

Run the water to check for leaks and adjust any loose connections. After you've set up your shower head, activate the water supply. Check for leaks by turning on the faucet. Connectors on your shower head may need to be tightened until the leak stops.

    • If more plumbing tape is required, add it now. [11]

One of my favorite products is made by a company called Method. You can buy it in bulk for next to nothing, and it won't harm the environment or your health in any way. Just spray it on, and then use an old toothbrush to scrub off the grime.

In fact, vinegar can be used to disinfect your shower head. Many people avoid using vinegar in their showers for fear of eroding the shower head. The use of vinegar is probably acceptable, though.
