Revamp Your Door: Expert Tips for Patching Holes Employing , , , Tags

Before fixing the hole, lay plastic sheeting on the floor below it to prevent any accidental spillage as the foam expands. To prevent the foam from spilling onto the door, tape paper or plastic on the face of the door from the hole down to the floor.

To begin the repair process, use a utility knife to carefully carve away the hole's ragged edges, and remove any loose or broken areas from the door.

Next, create a tight and solid ring around the hole on the inside by bunching up newspaper and forcing it into the hole.

Wearing personal protection, spray foam in the hole, starting at the bottom and working your way up. Use small strips of cardboard to push the foam into the hole, and fill it entirely. Keep checking the foam frequently, especially in the first hour or two, and remove any excess foam before it spills down the door. After the foam dries, remove the excess foam bulge by holding a hacksaw blade against the door, above the foam bulge and sawing it side to side. Use an oscillating multitool to trim the expansion foam flush to the door surface.

Clean up the foam surface and edges of the hole with a putty knife and sanding block, and abrade the foam with the rough side of the sanding block to lower it about 1/16-inch below the surface of the door. Apply acrylic latex filler to the hole and patch over as needed. Smooth it over with a 4-inch drywall knife, let it dry for a few hours, and check the patch for any pits or depressions. Sand the patch's surface with a fine-grit sanding block to make it flush with the door.

Finally, prime and paint the patched hole and the surrounding door surface. If you find it challenging to fix the hole, you may consider hiring a professional to help with repairing or installing a new door slab.

While it's usually worth fixing a hole in a door rather than replacing the entire door, if you need to replace the door, a professional can assist with installing a new door slab into the existing door frame.

Can't seem to get your patched door to look like real wood? No worries! We have a nifty solution for you. With the aid of an electric rotary tool, you can mimic wood grain to perfection. Just make sure the filler has fully cured before you start the simulation process.
