Obtaining a new or updated birth certificate in Ontario

In Ontario, a birth certificate serves as official proof of a person's identity and date of birth. This official document can serve as evidence of who you are.

Births that were registered in Ontario are the only ones eligible for a birth certificate from that province.

The number of copies of each birth certificate a person can receive is limited. For reasons of safety, this means that if you or a trusted third party (e.g. g When an authorized individual (such as a parent or legal guardian) requests a replacement certificate, the previously issued certificate becomes null and void.

Eligibility criteria
The following are valid reasons to request a copy of your birth certificate:
- if you're over the age of 13 and can legally drink in your own country
- you, if you are listed as a parent on the birth certificate of the child in question
- a minor, provided you can prove through legal paperwork that you are the child's legal guardian. All required paperwork, along with a cover letter referencing your online order number, must be mailed in after an application has been submitted online.

A certified copy of a birth registration is only available to a deceased person's next of kin, executor, or estate administrator (supporting documents are required).

Information contained on a birth certificate is taken directly from the official birth registration and includes the following:
- name
- Age and birth date
- sex
- birthplace
- registration date
- Identifier of Registration
- Time of Issuance
- validation code certificate issuer issue date
People aged 16 and up are encouraged to obtain this certificate so that they can apply for other forms of official identification.

Documentation of birth that includes details about the parents
The following details can be found on a copy of the original birth registration that includes the parents' names and information:

For children under the age of 16 who need their parents' contact information included on their birth certificate, this document is strongly suggested. It can be used for identification in the same ways as a basic birth certificate, but it also includes:
