To put the distance into perspective, your journey may traverse up to five Canadian provinces and 11 US states.

Undoubtedly, this expedition deserves to be spread across several days to fully appreciate the numerous stops. At the bare minimum, we recommend dedicating at least a week to complete this journey, allowing for nearly 6 hours of driving per day.

However, depending on the chosen route and the desire to explore attractions in greater depth, this voyage can be comfortably extended to span a leisurely two-week period.

As all of our suggested routes (with the exception of the Canada-only trip) involve crossing the border from Canada to the US, it is imperative that you possess the appropriate documentation and identification. Please ensure you stay informed about the most recent requirements closer to your travel dates.

Optimal Road Trip Route from Toronto to Vancouver

Embarking on a road trip from Toronto to Vancouver presents an incredible opportunity with multiple potential routes to explore. In fact, there are so many route options available that we have curated three recommended trips for you to choose from.

Despite their unique routes, our three options cover approximately the same distance, with the Direct Route being the quickest, requiring just 42 hours of non-stop driving to complete.

However, it is important to note that the speediest option may not necessarily be the most fulfilling. The Lake Route provides an excellent chance to admire the seldom-explored upper peninsula and all five of the Great Lakes. Alternatively, if you prefer to stay within Canada, our final route option offers splendid views of Manitoba and Alberta.

The Straight Path

Embark on your journey by taking a westerly direction on Highway 401 and continue until it meets Highway 3, which will lead you across the border into the US. Once you've crossed, proceed on I-96 through Detroit until you reach the opportunity to switch to I-94 heading westward.

Safely follow this route until you reach Gary, Indiana, located on the southern end of Lake Michigan. It might be worth considering a restful overnight stay in this town before transitioning onto the I-90 to continue heading west.

The next section of your journey will be remarkably uncomplicated, though equally long. You'll spend the majority of the next 3,425 km (2,128 miles) on the I-90. Take some time to explore Lake Traverse Reservation or Pine Ridge Reservation and consider an overnight break in Rapid City.

When you reach Ranchester, it is highly recommended to take a detour and visit the splendid Yellowstone National Park. To do so, exit the I-90 onto US-14 near the town, close to the border between Wyoming and Montana, and follow the road westward towards the park.

After your visit, simply continue north on US-191 until you rejoin the I-90. As you pass alongside the remarkable Kootenai National Forest, you'll eventually arrive in Seattle. Follow I-5 north until you cross over into Canada, where it becomes Highway 99, leading you all the way to Vancouver.

The Lake Adventure

Our second route brings us past all five of the stunning Great Lakes and allows for an exploration of Michigan's exquisite and often overlooked upper peninsula.

Once again, begin your journey by heading west on Highway 401. However, this time, switch to Highway 402 outside of London to cross the border into the United States. Proceed on I-94 for a short while before transitioning to I-69, passing through Flint Township in Michigan, and eventually joining I-75 going north.

Stay on this road until you reach the grand Mackinac Bridge, an impressive structure spanning 26,372 feet, connecting to the upper peninsula. This part of the route offers numerous attractions, so consider taking a brief stop to fully enjoy the nearby wonders.

From here, take US-2 westward to Blaney Park, then head north for a short distance on M-77 until you reach Seney. Proceed west on M-28 for quite a while until it reconnects with US-2 in Wakefield. Be sure to visit Ottawa National Forest, located halfway between Seney and Floodwood, on this stretch.

Continue your journey westward until you pass the town of Floodwood, where you'll switch to MN-200. Pass through some picturesque towns before making a southward turn onto MN-34. Follow this route for 110 km (68 miles) until you reach Detroit Lakes, a city renowned for its fishing lakes.

Next, transition to US-10 and head west to Fargo, which lies on the state line. Here, you have the option to take a detour to Sheyenne National Grassland. Once you enter North Dakota, you'll rejoin I-94 and drive its full width of 625 km (388 miles) until you reach Glendive, Montana.

Take exit 211 to MT-200S and follow it all the way. When you reach Circle, make a left turn onto MT-200, and continue westward to Grass Range, where it converges with US-87. Proceed westward once more.

The road will merge with US-89 southwest of Great Falls, which is another excellent option for an overnight stop. Continue along this road until you reach Browning, just outside Glacier National Park. From here, rejoin US-2 and travel westward until you are just north of Seattle.

From this point, it's a simple matter of heading north on I-5 and continuing to follow it even as it transforms into Highway 99 upon crossing the Canadian border. Follow this route all the way to Vancouver.

Driving into Vancouver is an absolute delight - this remarkable city offers a wide array of attractions and countless opportunities for exploration.

Embark on a journey towards the north on Highway 400 until it converges with the Trans-Canada Highway outside Nobel. At this point, consider taking a detour to explore the wonders of Algonquin Provincial Park and La Verendrye Wildlife Reserve.

Afterwards, continue your expedition on Highway 17 north for a little over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) until they diverge in Nipigon. Proceed on Highway 17 through Thunder Bay and contemplate a visit to Wabakimi Provincial Park, renowned for its captivating lakes and diverse wildlife.

Once you reach the provincial line, the road will transform into Trans-Canada Highway 1. Follow this road across the entirety of Manitoba and Alberta, passing through notable locations such as Winnipeg, Riding Mountain National Park, the intriguing city of Calgary, and Banff National Park. These destinations are all deserving of your time and exploration.

Maintain your course on Highway 1 until you arrive at Kamloops in British Columbia. From this point, journey along Highway 5 south, adjacent to the enchanting North Cascades National Park, until it reconvenes with Trans-Canada Highway 1. This road will guide you for the remaining stretch towards Vancouver.

If you opt for the Canadian Route, your adventure will include a visit to Riding Mountain National Park, an exquisite and untamed landscape.
