Strong teams, star players, and intriguing matchups have made the first few months of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations a lot of fun to watch.
Originally scheduled for the summer of 2021, the 33rd tournament has been postponed until now. Cameroon is playing host to the tournament, which will feature 52 games spread out over 29 days.
Senegal, ranked highest in Africa at 20th in the latest FIFA rankings, along with the defending champions Algeria, star-studded Egypt, and an experienced Morocco side, are all considered strong contenders for the title. The tournament follows a schedule similar to that of the World Cup, beginning with a frenetic round of 36 group stage matches and concluding with eight days of knockout stage matches (14 total matches) on Sunday, February 24. 6 There will be a match for third place as an appetizer to the finals.

Favorites to win the 2022 African Cup of Nations
There are clear favorites and underdogs among the 24 teams in the month-long tournament.
World Cup qualifying games played recently provide valuable insight into which teams are performing well and which have slipped when making wagers on the tournament. Although its group consisted of relatively easy opponents in Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Sudan, Morocco was the only team to win all six of its games. Cameroon, Senegal, and Mali all won five of their six AFCON qualifying games. Egypt and Algeria went undefeated, winning four games and drawing two.

Ivory Coast is another team that has a plethora of talented players who are currently on fire. With a 4-1-1 record, the Elephants finished second in World Cup qualifying Group D, behind winners Cameroon. The lone loss came in a 1-0 match, which eliminated the Ivory Coast and advanced Cameroon to the next round of qualifying.
Nonetheless, this is a country with tremendous offensive talent. With 10 goals in six Champions League group stage matches for Ajax, Sebastien Haller is arguably the most in-form player in the world. He is backed up by dribble masters Wilfried Zaha and Nicolas Pepe on the wings, as well as Maxwel Cornet, a winger for Burnley who was in good form before a recent injury derailed his season. Eric Bailly anchors a defense that has seen plenty of action. Due to injury, Bailly is no longer able to play alongside fellow Wolves defender Willy Boly, so 21-year-old Bayer Leverkusen starter Odilon Kossounou will do so instead.
The final piece of the puzzle is the midfield, which is led by the above-pictured partnership of Fulham's Jean-Michel Seri and AC Milan's Franck Kessie. With PSV Eindhoven star Ibrahim Sangare having a breakout season, the Elephants have a lot going for them in the Eredivisie. They offer an excellent balance of utility and aesthetic appeal.
Algeria, the tournament's second favorite, has a deep and talented roster and has a good chance of defending its title.

When it comes to strikers in good form heading into international competition, only Mohamed Salah, Riyad Mahrez, and Sebastien Haller stand out from their recent club stretches.
Salah's club form has been spectacular, with goals or assists in 15 consecutive Premier League games, but he looked fatigued in the final few games before departing for AFCON. Haller has been a prolific scorer for Ajax this season, as evidenced by his ten goals in six Champions League group stage games and his twelve goals in seventeen Eredivisie games.

However, neither player is in particularly good goal-scoring form for his country's team, which is just as crucial. Haller has only made eight appearances for his country's national team, but he scored twice in a 2-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Cameroon back in September. Salah, meanwhile, hasn't scored for Egypt since March, when he scored twice against the Comoros.
For both his club and country, Riyad Mahrez has been in outstanding form. With four goals and three assists in his last four games, Mahrez has been red hot for Manchester City as of late. The 30-year-old has also been pivotal for Algeria's national team, where he has been a mainstay since October 2020. With Algeria in contention for a deep run, Mahrez will have ample opportunities to play in enough games to win the tournament.
