How to Create Beautiful Layered Bangs in 3 Easy Steps

Make the part you like best! Hold your hairline with your second knuckle and rest your index finger there. When combing your bangs, start at the tip of your index finger.

    • Be sure your hair is completely dry. Wet hair can lengthen by as much as 45 percent, making it appear significantly longer. If you try to cut it while it's wet, you might end up with a mess on your hands. [1]
  2. 2

Stick the comb where your index finger used to be. Draw a slanted line from your part to the base of your hair. Don't let the line get crooked. [2]

Re-ponytail the rest of your hair. If your hair is short, you can even clip it out of your eyes. Bangs should only be cut from the section of hair you've designated as such.

  4. 4

Grab the ends of your hair with your middle and index fingers. Switch to your non-dominant hand. Have the hair pulled taut and even.

The angle at which your bangs fall on your face is the angle at which you should cut them. You can cut them at any angle you like, but one common suggestion is to make the cuts parallel to the line you made when you parted your bangs. If you want a longer bang, trim them closer to the top of your lip; if you want a shorter bang, trim them closer to the tip of your nose. Make sure the cuts are nice and even. [3]

Don't cut them down too much! Take care not to overcut them Start by cutting them shorter than you want them, and then work your way up to the desired length and angle.

  7. 7

To achieve the layered effect with your new bangs, cut vertically upward across the bottom. Cutting safely requires keeping the scissors open. Cut your bangs vertically while moving horizontally across the hair. [4]

Make up your own part. Starting about an inch and a half out from your hairline, make an inverted V. You should position the "top" of the triangle at the very top of your head. You can find the outermost points by lining them up with the very ends of your eyebrows. Outside of that, the fringe risks looking unattractive.

    • Before you begin cutting your hair, make sure it is completely dry. When your hair is in its "normal" or "everyday" state, that's when you should get a trim. You may not like the way your hair looks on a regular day if it is abnormally curly or frizzy on the day you get it cut.
  2. 2

Brush the bangs in front. Finish by pulling the rest of your hair into a low ponytail. The only hair that should be out of the ponytail is the hair that will become the bangs, or the ponytail itself.

  3. 3

Make a horizontal cut at the length your bangs should be the longest. This means that the length of your longest hair should determine the length of your bangs if you want them to blend in with the rest of your hair. Infinitely more can be slashed.

  4. 4

Put your combed-back bangs flat against your face. Make sure your bangs are horizontally combed and resting against your face. The length of your bangs is a personal preference. You can always trim them down, but once they're gone, they're gone for good.

  5. 5

The bangs are held between the middle and index fingers. Make use of your "lesser" hand. Have the hair pulled taut and even.

Start slicing in the center. Use your thumb and index finger to hold your bangs in place, and then cut vertically up towards your fingers. Always cut with the scissors open and gently at first. Feathered and layered hairstyles are recommended.

To remove layers, move the scissors to the side of your face. Maintain a vertical stance while cutting horizontally. Blend your bangs into your natural hair by cutting off progressively less hair from the temples to the ears. [5]

  1. 1

Stop trying to "fix them" by cutting their hair even shorter. If you accidentally shorten your bangs, don't try to fix the situation by cutting them even shorter. Leave them too short and seek another solution such as getting the help of a professional stylist or wearing your bangs pinned up

  2. 2

Alternate the part in your hair. If your side bangs are too short, try parting your hair on the other side. Put the shorter bangs out of sight by sweeping the longer ones over them. [6]

  3. 3

Hide your bangs with an accessory. You can pull your bangs and the rest of your hair back neatly by using a scarf or a headband. You can also twist them to the side using a barrette. [7]

  4. 4

Visit a hairstylist. If your bangs turned out wonky or in the wrong place, a trip to the salon is in order, but you could try fixing them on your own. If your natural bangs are too short, a stylist can add clip-in bang extensions that look completely natural.

Absolutely Having bangs cut down on the appearance of a large forehead. When you wear your hair in a side-swept frame fringe, only the highest point of your forehead will be visible.
  • Question

What do you get if you hold the bangs upward while you cut them? Can Layers Exist

  • Question

I'm interested in the top knot of hair. Is it horizontally or vertically oriented?

    Community Answer

The inverted V shape is for side-swept bangs. It's more nebulous for fringes on the sides. It should extend horizontally for about 2 to 3 inches, and vertically for about 1 inch, from the thicker side of your side part. It varies from person to person, though, because of individual differences in hair and fashion.
