Gradual Permitting for New Drivers

A G1 license is issued after successful completion of the vision and knowledge exams. In order to get your full G license, you must first:

  • complete the G1 and G2 courses
  • completed two road tests

The term "graduated licensing" is used to describe this method. It's meant to help new drivers gradually gain competence behind the wheel.

To complete the entire procedure, you have up to five years. If you don't have your full G license after five years, you'll have to start all over.

G1 licence

With a G1 license, you're required by law to do the following:

  • sustain a BAC of 0 (no alcohol in your system at all times).
  • make sure that everyone in your car is using a working seatbelt.
  • not operate a motor vehicle between the hours of m
  • not take any highways in the 400-series or any high-speed expressways (e. g Highway 401, Gardiner Expressway, Queen Elizabeth Way
  • ride along with a driver who possesses all of the following:
    • drive for a minimum of four years
    • blood alcohol content (BAC) below 05 (this person's blood alcohol content should be zero if they are under 21 years of age).

To comply with safety regulations, you and your driver are the only passengers allowed in the front seat. Anyone with an Ontario-licensed driving instructor can take their students on any road in the province.

To get your G1 license, you usually need to go through a 12-month period of practice.

Next level road test (G1 exit exam)

As a new motorist, this is the first of two exams required of you.

  • After 12 months, you can take your first driving test with a G1 license.
  • Fundamentals of driving, such as:
    • Changing directions to the left and right
    • stopping
    • Doing So In A Parallel Fashion
    • directions only
    • Altering lanes
    • 360-degree pivots
    • urban driving vs. suburban driving
    • Stop signs, yield signs, and traffic lights
  • Successful candidates are awarded a G2 license.

Taking your first driving test is as quick as eight months away if you complete a government-approved driver education program.

Programs in Ontario's Driving Academies

If you want to take the G1 road test sooner, you should enroll in a driving school that is approved to teach new drivers.

G2 licence

A G2 license is issued to drivers who have already passed the G1 exam. After receiving your G2 license, you have 12 months to put it to use. Finally, you're an authorized driver!

  • without a second, more seasoned driver
  • on every street in Ontario
  • Generally, it doesn't matter what time of day it is

You still need to:

  • achieve a BAC of 0
  • transport no more people than the number of functional seatbelts.

However, if you're under the age of 19, there are further limitations.

Motorists under the age of 19 are classified as G2 drivers.

From eleven o'clock in the evening until five o'clock in the morning m There can be no more than one passenger in your car who is younger than 19 years old.

For the first half of G2, this proviso is in effect. Six months after your permit has been issued, you may transport up to three minors younger than 19 between midnight and 5 a.m. m

Exceptions to this rule include:

  • Someone who has been driving for at least four years and has a valid license is in the car with you.
  • Members of your own family or very close friends (e g relatives (e.g., a parent, sibling, etc.)

The G driving test (G2 exit)

As a new driver, this is the second of two road tests.

  • You need a G2 license and wait 12 months before taking the exam.
  • This exam evaluates more complex aspects of driving, such as g In the car, while cruising down the interstate
  • Successful candidates are awarded a Class G driver's license.

The G road test has been temporarily modified at both permanent DriveTest centres and temporary road test locations to help clear the backlog of in-vehicle passenger road tests caused by COVID-19 restrictions and closures. Normal G license exams will still be available at select Travel Point locations.

These topics, which are also covered in the G2 road test, will not be included in the G road test until further notice.

  • Doing So In A Parallel Fashion
  • Highway rest areas
  • 90-degree turn
  • in the middle of a residential area

Even so, the test will cover the basics, such as:

  • Driving on freeways and other major roads, including merging, lane changes, speed management, and signaling.
  • Navigational alterations such as a change in lanes or a turn
  • intersections
  • business driving

Find out more about the requirements for the G driving exam.

When does a failed G1 or G2 road test result in a suspension of driving privileges?

You may take the driving test again if your G1 license has not yet expired.

If your G1 license has expired, you must retake the knowledge and skills tests as well as pay the associated fees.

Before your G2 license expires, you have the option of retaking the G1 test and gaining an additional five years to drive.
