Exciting New Addition: Alberta Vaccine Lottery Now Offering Travel Prizes!

Out of a desire to motivate citizens to complete their vaccination regimen, Alberta is now offering travel prizes as part of its COVID-19 vaccine lottery. The province's current three $1 million lottery rounds will now be supplemented with 40 travel prizes, including a week-long retreat at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico and round-trip airfares to anywhere in Canada.

This incentive program, which the Alberta government announced on Wednesday, has been made possible thanks to WestJet and Air Canada, which will also issue vouchers for two-round trip tickets anywhere they serve. Alberta residents who have been fully vaccinated have until August 24 to enter online for a chance to win the prizes, with the draws scheduled for August 31. A single entry is all that is needed to enter all of Alberta's vaccine lottery rounds, including the ones with travel allowances.

According to Doug Schweitzer, the Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation, "the safe relaunch of travel is crucial to Canada's economic recovery, and the sooner Canadians are fully vaccinated, the quicker we can restore employment to our travel and tourism sector that has been severely hit." This travel prize addition comes on the heels of the $3 million vaccine lottery plan that was revealed last Monday, with three rounds of draws set to happen during the summer. Anyone over the age of eighteen who has received their initial shot can participate in the first draw, which will take place one week after the province reaches its 70-percent vaccination mark.

The second and third lotteries are for Albertans who have received both doses of the vaccine, with draws scheduled for the end of August and September. The province plans to lift most public health restrictions two weeks after 70 percent of residents 12 years old and older have received their first dose. Currently, 69.4% of the eligible population has received at least one shot, while 22% have received two doses.

Though first-time vaccination demand in Alberta has decreased this month, the lottery could convince hesitant Albertans to get the vaccine according to Tyler Shandro, the Health Minister. Moreover, the lottery is expected to pay for itself by reducing case numbers. Other provinces, such as Manitoba, have announced similar incentive programs to encourage vaccination. Alberta reported 127 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths on Tuesday.
