Discover the Importance of Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
In Canada, to legally work, you need a 9-digit Social Insurance Number (SIN) that is exclusive to you. Use by another person is prohibited by the law. However, due to the pandemic, Service Canada has limited the number of available in-person appointments. Consequently, we recommend that you follow these steps to get your SIN.
Required Documents
To apply, you will need the following documents:
An original Study Permit from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) showing that you have permission to work in Canada. Please note that the approval letter is not sufficient.
A photograph ID displaying your legal name, such as a passport or driver's license.
Proof of residency with your current address, such as a governmental document, bank document, employment contract, cell phone, utility or cable bill, lease/rental agreement or verification from your landlord.
At Loyalist College Residence, students may ask their residence staff to obtain a confirmation letter with their address.
If you reside off-campus without staying at Loyalist College Residence, you must offer a lease/rental agreement or confirmation from your landlord to confirm your local address.
Cost
No fees are applicable to get a SIN.
Steps to Apply
1) Apply Through Online Portal
It's simple to apply online. Submit your SIN application via a secure and protected environment using the online system and upload digital copies of your documentation. Please go to the What do you need before you apply page to make sure you have all the required documentation for your application.
2) Applying by Mail
If you prefer to apply for your SIN via snail mail, you must complete the SIN application form and provide it along with your original documents. Your original documents will be returned by mail once your application is processed.
3) In-person Appointment
If you require in-person service, you may request an appointment by completing the service request form. A Service Canada representative will contact you within two business days. If your request cannot be resolved over the phone, you will be offered an appointment at a Service Canada Centre. Please note that same-day appointments are not available.
Processing Time for Applications
Online and paper applications may take approximately 25 business days* to process. Your SIN will be mailed to your local address, not Loyalist College, if you are a Canadian student. International students are not legally authorized to work without a SIN.
*Please be aware that COVID-19 may affect processing times, and this timeline is for guidance only - do not submit more than one application.
