Canada Post: Three Uses

  1. 1

Pick an appropriate envelope size for your papers. How much you have to pay to send an envelope depends on its size. There are two broad categories of mail in Canada: standard and non-standard. Cards and letters typically measure at least 140 mm (5.51 inches) wide and 90 mm (3.54 inches) tall. 5 in x 3 5 in ) and a maximum of 245 mm width by 156 mm height (9 6 in x 6 1 in ) Keep your greeting cards and letters within the standard envelope size if at all possible. Non-standard envelope sizes will incur additional postage costs. [1]

    • Standard mail has a maximum size of 235 mm x 120 mm (9. 2 in x 4 7 in ) If you plan on sending a greeting card or letter to the United States or anywhere else abroad
  2. 2

Determine the cost of postage. The cost of mailing an item depends on its dimensions, weight, and final destination. In most cases, a single Canadian stamp is sufficient for sending a standard-sized greeting card or letter within the country. You'll probably need extra postage for anything that doesn't fit the standard mail size or is going overseas. To find your rate, visit https://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/apps/far/business/findARate. [2]
    • Postage is only $1 for letters up to 30 g (about 5 sheets of paper) in weight. After 2020, a single stamp will cost $0.07. Stamp booklets can be purchased for close to nothing. 92 a stamp One dollar is required for postage. From 30 to 50 grams (about 9 sheets of paper), add $30 for standard shipping. The term "nonstandard size" is used to describe anything larger.
    • Any time you have any doubts about how to send a letter, just head on over to the post office.

  3. 3

Use all capital letters for the return address. Write the recipient's address in the middle of the back of the envelope (the side without the flap) if you're mailing a card or letter. You'll find the recipient's name on the first line, followed by the street number, and then the city, province, and postal code, in that order, in a typical Canadian address. This is an example of an address:[3]

    • 10123 S.E. Main St., Apt. 2 Samuel Gagnon

      Montréal, Québec H3Z 2Y7

  4. 4

You can drop your letter off at any mailbox across Canada. Once you've put the correct postage and address on an envelope, you can drop it off at any mailbox and a mail carrier will retrieve it on their next delivery run. Taking it to the post office in person will result in a faster mail delivery. [4]

    • Mail is collected from the large red mailboxes at regular intervals throughout the day. Learn when your letter will be picked up and delivered by looking at the collection schedule posted on the mailbox.
  5. 5

If you want the ability to monitor the delivery of a package, you should use registered mail. If you send a letter or card via registered mail, you will be given confirmation of its delivery. When a letter or card is delivered, the recipient signs for it, and their signature and the date are recorded on a receipt. In the year 2020, the cost of sending a registered letter will rise to . 75 on top of the standard postage price [5]

    • Getting your card or letter registered requires physically delivering it to a post office.

  1. 1

Sign up for a Canada Post account so you can send packages online. If you haven't already, create an account at https://www.canadapost.ca/cpc/en/personal/receiving/manage-mail/epost.page. If you have a smartphone or other mobile device, you can also use a free app to make shipping labels. [6]
    • In order to use the epost service, you need a real street address in Canada. [7]
    • Along with the ability to send and receive packages, you can also order stamps and track their whereabouts through your epost account.
  2. 2

Describe the package you wish to send. Include the recipient's address, as well as the package's weight and dimensions. If you're sending a package and don't have a scale, Canada Post provides guides to help you estimate the weight. [8]

    • Without wrapping it, your package should be at least one side larger than the barcode on the shipping label. Don't bother shipping a small box unless you've got another box big enough to fit it inside.
  3. 3

You can get a specialized label printed after you make a purchase. The shipping cost is calculated by epost after you enter the package's destination, weight, and dimensions. All major credit cards and debit cards are accepted for online payments. The file containing the package's shipping label can then be printed. [9]

    • When you take your package to the post office for delivery, they will print your pre-purchased shipping label for you if you don't have a printer at home. This service is offered at no additional cost to you.
  4. 4

Fasten the label to your package for shipping. To ensure that the entire contents of your package can be read from the shipping label, you should affix it to the middle of the longest side. Make sure the label is flush and wrinkle-free against the box by taping all four sides. [10]

    • Stick your shipping label on with some strong, transparent packing tape. If possible, refrain from taping over the barcode, as this may make scanning difficult.
  5. 5

Bring your package to the post office and drop it off. A mail carrier will pick up packages that are too small to fit in a mailbox. If not, the post office is where you need to be. If you purchased a shipping label online and already paid for it, there is nothing else you need to do at the post office. [11]

    • Send your package off at the local post office if you didn't make a label for it yourself online. You can bring in your package for weighing and measuring, and they'll print out a label for you right then.
    • You can check the status of your package at any time after you've shipped it by visiting the Canada Post website or by downloading the Canada Post app to your mobile device.

  1. 1

Put things away in a container that won't break or leak. Canada Post packages consist of two parts: the inner container and the outer container. Seal the mailed items using the inner container. Use a plastic or metal inner container with a tight-fitting lid if there are any liquids. [12]

    • Before placing fragile items in the inner container, wrap them in tissue paper or newspaper. Wrap a sheet of corrugated cardboard around the perimeter of plate glass items, like a picture frame, to protect the glass during shipping. To prevent the glass from falling out, you can tape them together.
  2. 2

Pack the inner envelope or box with your name and address clearly marked. Names and addresses should be written on the inner container as well as the outer one. The contents of your package will be safe from harm and can still be delivered even if the outer packaging is lost or damaged. [13]

    • Make sure the recipient has your name and address to return the package to. If there's a problem with delivery, Canada Post can send the package back to you using this method.
  3. 3

Pack the receptacle into a cardboard box for transport. Choose a high-quality cardboard box. All previous addresses and warnings should be covered or crossed out if the envelope has been used for shipping anything else. [14]

    • Check that the inner container is safely fastened inside the outer box. Pack your package so that it can survive being dropped from a height of about 1 meter onto a concrete surface.
    • If the inner container has any wiggle room in the shipping box, extra padding should be added in the form of newspaper or bubble wrap to protect the contents.
  4. 4

Use heavy-duty tape to close the shipping box. You should tape all the box's flaps together so there are no gaps and the box can be stored flat. A larger box may be necessary if there are spaces between the flaps or if a flap opens accidentally. [15]

    • Check the tape's integrity by rotating the box in all directions.
  5. 5

Use kraft paper to line the shipping container. Brown paper grocery bags are made of Kraft paper, which is thick packaging paper. It's sold in many different retail settings, including online marketplaces, post offices, dollar stores, and hobby shops. Cover the box with the wrapping paper as if it were a present. [16]

    • Seal all of the folded paper together using strong packing tape. Make sure it completely surrounds the box and is sealed before sending.
  6. 6

Include any necessary shipping notes. A warning in all capital letters on the top and one side of the box will let handlers know to be extra careful with your package if it contains fragile or hazardous items. Packaging containing ingredients that are allergens for some people, such as peanuts, sesame seeds, tree nuts (like almonds or walnuts), or eggs, should be clearly marked as such. [17]

    • When shipping a fragile item, such as a glass vase, it is important to mark the box accordingly. Write "PERISHABLE" on the box if you're sending perishable goods like fruit or other food. "
    • You can now send off your package after purchasing and affixing the proper shipping label.
