A Visual Guide to Making a Wasp Trap
-
1
You'll need to remove the labels from a 2 liter (0. Soda bottle (53 US gallons) If you can't see clearly inside the bottle, you won't know if any wasps were captured. You can still use it if the bottle you chose has labels that cannot be removed, but the checks will be more time-consuming and labor-intensive. [1]
- In other words, a 0. This wasp trap was made from a plastic bottle (53 US gal). For this trap, any type of plastic bottle or carton will do; just make sure the opening is big enough for the wasp to fit through. [2]
-
2
Mark a ring around the bottle's opening with a marker. Placement of the line should be just below the bottle's neck, at the point where the bottle's middle section transforms into a straight cylinder. The line's only purpose is to serve as a rough guide while cutting the bottle. [3]
- When marking a carton, the line should be drawn around the upper part of the carton, just below the crease that forms the triangular top.

3
Remove the bottle top by slicing along the dotted line. It's up to you whether you use a razor blade, scissors, or nothing at all. If the tool is sharp enough, it can easily sever the bottle in half. [4]
- You should take your time and be careful not to cut yourself when making the first cut because the plastic bottle is slippery. Place the bottle on a damp cloth or towel to prevent it from sliding around. This will provide the necessary grip to keep the bottle from falling over.
- In order to complete this trap, you will need to remove the bottle's base and neck.
-
4
Olive oil should be used to grease the inside of the bottle and the funnel using a paper towel. If you do this, you can make an additional, slippery barrier that the wasps can't get over. It is not required, as the oil can become tacky without regular maintenance or cleaning of the bottle, but it can make the trap more effective in the short term. Petroleum jelly can be used in place of olive oil.
-
5
Invert the neck and insert it into the bottle. The wasps can enter the trap through the neck of the bottle, but they won't be able to escape. Before inserting the neck into the bottle, make sure the cap has been removed. This slit is where the wasps will enter.
-
6
Join the slit ends of the two pieces with tape. If you tape down the funnel, it won't fall. When doing this, clear packing tape is recommended so that you can easily spot a wasp inside the trap. [5]
- If you're using a tape that isn't transparent, like duct tape, fold the strip in half so that you have a narrower band of tape.
-
7
Puncture the edge of the funnel twice, once on opposite sides. The 2 holes can be made with a hole-puncher, scissors, or any other pointed object. Just be cautious when drilling the holes so you don't hurt yourself. [6]
-
8
Puncture holes every 12 inches (30 centimeters) and tie a piece of string to both ends. So that your wasp trap can be hung, a handle can be made. Use whatever string you have on hand, but make sure it can hold the trap's weight and withstand any gusts of wind. [7]
- A strong piece of twine or even an old shoelace could be used as a handle for the wasp trap.

In the spring and early summer, you can catch more fish by using grease or meat scraps as bait. The wasps can be drowned more easily if you dilute the mixture with water. Wasps need protein in order to build their nests and hatch their young during the spring and early summer.
- When this occurs, using meat to lure wasps out of their nests is a good strategy, and may even result in capturing the queen.
-

During the late summer and early fall, set your trap with a tasty treat. Add water and liquid dish soap to the sugary substance and mix thoroughly. In late summer and early fall, when they need more fuel, wasps will scout around for sugary treats. The wasp will drown because the dish soap will cause the surface tension to be broken. Sugar, lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar are all tasty options. The sweet options and their quantities may need to be adjusted until the desired number of wasps is attracted. [8]- As long as you maintain a ratio of 1 teaspoon (4 mL) of soap to every 8 ounces of water, you should be able to fill your trap. Mix 1 tablespoon (15. 9 mL) of liquid dish soap into 1 cup (240 mL) of water. [9]
- Do not add dish soap to the bait solution if you plan to instead release the wasp. If any wasps manage to get away, you can use dish soap to coat them and kill them by suffocation. [10]
-
3
To use a wasp trap, put the bait solution in the funnel. Wasps won't get into the trap if the bait solution covers the opening of the bottle. About 1-2 inches (2 5–5 (About 0. 1 centimeter) of the solution in the bottle For the wasps to get to the bait, they'll have to go all the way into the trap. [11]
- Avoid the 2 liter (0. If you intended to use a plastic bottle that could hold 53 US gallons (gal), but instead used a shorter bottle, you will need to dilute the solution more. You need 2 inches out of every five In the shorter trap, there is only a millimeter (approximately a
- Only add 1–3 tablespoons (15–44 mL) of the solution to the bottle if you intend to release the wasps. This amount of solution will be just right for luring the wasp, but not enough to kill it.

Traps can be set up on the ground or hung from the ceiling outside. Raise the trap off the floor by setting it on a table or stool. A low tree branch or fence post are also good places to hang the trap. Hanging traps of roughly 4 feet (1 wasps than traps placed on the ground, even at a height of 2 m (6.5 ft).
- You shouldn't put the wasp trap in a location where you spend a lot of time, like near your desk at work. Around 27 feet (8 a mere 2 meters) from your outdoor gathering's focal point [12]

Remember to check the wasp trap every day. In order to lure in the wasps, you need to use the appropriate bait and position your trap appropriately. Check on the wasp trap at least once a day for the first few days, or until you are certain it is effective. [13]
- If you are having trouble catching wasps, try moving the trap to a new location, changing the bait solution, or both.
-
2
Every three days, remove the tape from the trap and clean it. When left unattended, the dead wasps float on the surface of the bait solution, providing a perch for more flying insects to land on. Before removing the tape from the trap, make sure that all of the wasps inside are dead. It's likely that any wasps that make it out of the trap alive will be dangerously aggressive. [14]
- Be very careful when releasing live wasps. Wasps are naturally aggressive and cannot coexist with bees. If you insist on releasing the wasps, please do so in a remote area, far from your home and any populated areas. Don't let the wasp out near the nest, as it will alert the rest of the colony if given the chance. You could try releasing the wasps in nearby fields or woods if there are none nearby that are inhabited. [15]
- Wear protective clothing and gloves if you plan on releasing live wasps. [16]
-
3
Put the dead wasps in the ground or flush them down the toilet. Wasps often attack as a swarm if they think one of their own is in danger. When a wasp dies, it releases a chemical that serves to call its fellow wasps to the scene. The wasps' dead bodies will attract more wasps if you just dump them or throw them away in the trash. [17]
-
4
Reassemble the trap with tape and add more bait. This homemade wasp trap, unlike sticky wasp traps, can be reused multiple times. All you have to do is whip up some fresh bait solution and restock. [18]
- If you lubricated the inside of your trap with olive oil or petroleum jelly, apply more of that as well.
- If the trap begins to smell sour or rotten, you should wash it out with hot water before re-baiting it. If the odor persists, you can try neutralizing it with apple cider vinegar in the wasp trap you already have or construct a new one.

Question
If I don't have a plastic bottle, could I use a milk carton instead?
That's right, the idea is identical. Most wasps won't ever learn to escape as long as the opening is facing downward. Honey bees also avoid apple juice with vinegar added to it. My name is (insert beekeeping name here) and I keep bees. Bees do not appreciate the rotting smell of vinegar, but wasps and hornets do. Wasps flutter forward, ricocheting off the walls. When they try to return to their original height via hovering, they will fail. They run out of steam and drown in the liquid below.
-
Question
Can we substitute eggs for meat?
Not something I'd suggest doing. Skunks or raccoons, for example, might be drawn to the trap by the stench.
-
Question
Will all of the wasps be caught in the bottle, or will some get out and endanger the kids playing in the yard?
That they could get away is a real possibility. Also, "Do not place the trap anywhere near where children or pets will be spending time," as the trap will attract real wasps. "
