Next, remove the filter. Carefully open the vacuum cleaner and gently push the release button on the filter housing if there is one. Then, separate the filter from the plastic housing if it can be removed.

If necessary, soak the filter. Add cold water to a bowl, but do not include any detergent. Lower the filter into the bowl and let it soak for a minimum of five minutes.
For cordless vacuums like the DC35 and DC44, a pre-soak may be required.[4]
For upright vacuums, like the DC17, some require a pre-soak while others, such as the DC24 Multi Floor, do not.[5]

Finally, rinse the filter under cold water. Gently squeeze the filter while you rinse, and continue to rinse and squeeze for at least five minutes or until the water runs clear.[6]
It is possible that some filters require multiple rinses before the water runs clear, sometimes up to ten times. Once done, tap off any excess water and shake off the filter over a sink. You can also tap the filter against your hand or sink to expel extra droplets of water. Lay the filter in a warm and dry place horizontally, unless the manufacturer's instructions indicate otherwise. Avoid microwaving, tumble drying, or putting it near an open flame. For instance, leave the filter outside in the sunshine or near a radiator (not on it). Allow the filter to dry entirely before putting it back into your machine. Depending on the model, air drying might take up to twelve or twenty-four hours for upright, cordless or robot models.
Regarding filter replacement, even with regular cleaning, filters will have to be replaced yearly. The frequency of cleaning and replacing filters relies on usage.
